During the flu season, it is best for all of us to do everything possible to stay healthy.
Although we don’t have a complete treatment that can guarantee immunity, we have some mechanism in place that can help us from getting sick this flu season. Below are ways to protect ourselves during the flu season.
- Getting a flu shot
This is one of the mechanisms for protecting ourselves from the flu. A flu shot is the best thing that you need every season to protect ourselves from the flu. Flu shots protect our body against 3 to 4 flu viruses that are rampant during flu season. Flu shots are vaccines that are administered by injecting your arm with a needle. The vaccine triggers antibiotics within two weeks that provide protection against the strains contained in the flu vaccine.
Anyone above the age of 6 months is qualified to get the yearly flu vaccine. We also have other types of flu vaccines that are available depending on your age and whether you have a chronic health condition or whether you are a pregnant woman. Children below the age of 6 months are not allowed to receive flu shots.
- Good health habits
This is a very contiguous disease; it can quickly spread from one person to another through the droplets that are produced when one sneezes, coughs, touches contaminated surfaces, or even speaks. Therefore, it is essential to maintain high levels of hygiene practices when symptoms of flu start to show up.
It would help if you stayed up-to-date with all forms of vaccination to avoid developing severe sickness during the flu season. Ensure you are protected together with your family members by staying up to date with all forms of vaccination. Timely vaccination goes ahead to prevent you from developing another disease during the flu season. Weakened immune systems from other illnesses will make it much more likely to contract the flu.
- Nasal spray
This is a flu vaccine that is sprayed on your nose. It is made from a virus that can’t cause flu. It is used by people who are aged between 2 and 49 years, not pregnant women, and are in good health.
It is not appropriate for people who are above 50 years and below 2years, people who have a weak immune system and those with chronic conditions.
It is not always too late to protect yourself from flu this season
