Over the years, there are more than a handful of celebrities who have shared their Lyme disease diagnosis with the world. These include Avril Lavigne, Ally Hilfiger, Thalia, and most recently Justin Bieber. While many thought that Bieber was overcoming a drug-related matter, he recently opened up on social media and informed this was not the case. He openly admitted that he had been diagnosed with Lyme disease and that he has had to undergo a variety of treatments to place its symptoms to a halt.
What Is Lyme Disease?
Lyme disease is defined as an infection that evolves due to Borrelia burgdorferi, which is a bacterium referred to as spirochete that is carried by deer ticks. A tick that is infected can transmit the spirochete to the individual it bites. It has been noted that in the United States alone, the incidence of this infection has doubled since 1991. Approximately 30,000 individuals of different ages suffer from this matter every year in the U.S. Nevertheless, many professionals in the medical field assume this number to be much higher, as they believe there is underreporting.
Common Lyme Disease Symptoms
The most common Lyme disease symptoms are bull’s-eye rash, neck stiffness, severe headache, muscle tone loss, severe joint pain, irregular heartbeat, and weakness in the limbs. If you note one or more of these symptoms and note that they persist as the days go by, you should consult a doctor as soon as possible.
Preventing Lyme Disease
There are several things that you can do to prevent Lyme disease when you are hiking, camping, gardening, or just playing outdoors. It is recommended that you wear long-sleeved shirts, long pants, wear closed boots or shoes, avoid walking through high grass, use insect repellent, and consider treating your gear and clothing with permethrin to keep ticks at bay.
Treating Lyme Disease Adequately
If Lyme disease is detected in its early stages, it can be cured with one or more antibiotics. If adequate treatment is not administered, there are severe complications that can arise. This reflects that the sooner one acquires medical aid, the better it will be for one’s overall well-being when facing this infection.
